The Diósgyőri VTK Jegesmedvék ( Diósgyőr-Vasgyári Testgyakorlók Köre - Jegesmedvék - German  circle for the physical training of the iron workers of Diósgyőr - polar bears ) is a Hungarian ice hockey club from Miskolc . In 2015 he won the triple of the MOL league , Hungarian championship and cup victory . The club has been playing in the Slovak Extra League since 2018 .

history

The history of ice hockey in Miskolc began in 1978 with the construction of the first artificial ice rink. The physician Georg Lukacs, who played ice hockey and became an ice hockey coach while studying at the Budapest University of Physical Education, organized the first ice hockey club in Miskolc in 1978. The Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation placed this in the 2nd class of the newly established national ice hockey championship.

In the 1984/85 season, the Miskolci Kinisci won the 2nd league and rose with other teams in the highest Hungarian ice hockey league . In the following years, the team from Miskolc always managed to keep the class, but never got beyond fourth place.

In the 1989/90 season, as in all of Hungarian society, there was a radical change in ice hockey. The club had financial problems and it was announced that the ice hockey department would stop operating for the next season. Thanks to the commitment of many parents in the youth departments, a new club, the Miskolci Hoki Club (MHC), was founded on October 12, 1990 to continue ice hockey in Miskolc. The greatest success of the ice hockey team from Miskolc was the participation in the Hungarian Cup final in 1993, which the MHC lost to the team Jászberényi Lehel HC . After problems with players and the Hungarian Federation, the second phase of ice hockey ended in Miskolc in 1994. The MHC continues to exist as a foundation to support the junior and senior team.

On March 16, 1994, the new club Miskolci Jegesmedvék Jégkorong Sportegyesület ( German  ice hockey club Eisbären Miskolc ) was founded again by supporters of the young ice hockey players in Miskolc, which lives primarily from the voluntary commitment of the club's management, coaches, technicians and other members. The goal was again to create a men's team from our own offspring. In 1996 a team from Miskolc entered the 2nd division (then 3rd division) of the Hungarian championship. After a third place in the first season, the league was won in 1997/98 and promotion to the 1st division was achieved. In the following year, the team reached third place in the table. After a league reform of the first division, Miskolce rose to the highest Hungarian league. Since there was no relegation in the 1999/2000 season , the Miskolci JJSE remained first class despite only four wins from 24 games.

In the 1997/98 season, a team from Miskolc competed in each of the age groups in the Hungarian championship and young players can also be found in the national teams. As a result, the Hungarian junior championship title of 1997/98 was achieved. The ice rink was renovated in 2000 and covered in 2006.

In the following years Miskolc always played in the first division, although the seasons were always finished in the back places. It wasn't until 2011/12 that the club's best placement, participation in the finals, was achieved.

In 2015 the club celebrated its greatest success to date by winning the Hungarian-Romanian MOL league . Equivalent to this triumph was winning the Hungarian championship for the first time .

After this success, the ownership of the club changed: 51% remained with the parent club, 24.5% went to the local football club Diósgyőri VTK (through its majority owner Borsodport Invest Kft.) And 24.5% went to Miskolc Holding Zrt. In the course of this, the name of the club changed based on the football club in DVTK Jegesmedvék .

In the following years 2016 and 2017 the polar bears again won the MOL league and the Hungarian championship.

For the 2018/19 season, the club moved to the Slovakian extra league .
