Mission Control Texas is a German documentary film directed by Ralf Bücheler in 2015 . It shows the work of an atheist call-in broadcast in the USA Bible Belt .

content

In the middle of the strongly religious south of the USA, in Austin , a group of idealistic enlightenment thinkers meets every Sunday and discusses with their devout people on the TV show The Atheist Experience . Matt Dillahunty , one of the hosts of the internet and cable TV show, relentlessly questions the internalized religious dogmas of his callers. He even drives one of them to reveal himself live on the show as a slavery advocate, as he is not prepared to contradict the Bible on this point. Dillahunty repeatedly throws callers off the line if they are unfazed by rational arguments.

In addition to the small atheist community, Mission Control Texas documents bizarre church services, a rodeo, miraculous healing and the giving of food to the poor. Everything is accompanied by prayers, religiosity seems to be omnipresent. Nevertheless, one complains in a tea party meeting about a lack of religious freedom in politics - whereby it is by no means about the freedom of all religions, but only about that of Christianity.

A caller asks the atheists whether there are any among them who do more harm than good to the free thinker movement through their behavior. Dillahunty understands the hidden criticism of his often gruff manner: “I have no problem with either diplomats or firebrands involved in the discussions surrounding this movement. I think, we need both, because I think, some people kind of need to be shocked into trying to challenge us. " (German: "I have nothing against diplomats or inciters in this discussion. We need both, because we have to shock some so that they can deal with us.")
