Mittéï , actually Jean Mariette , another pseudonym Hao (born June 5, 1932 in Cheratte , Province of Liège , Belgium ; † April 16, 2001 ), was a Belgian comic author and illustrator.

Life

After completing his studies at the Institut Saint-Luc and the Academy of Fine Arts of Liège , he first worked as an architect, later in advertising, and finally discovered his passion for drawing comics. His first unfinished comic La Course au Timbre appeared in 1955 in the five issues of the short-lived magazine Paddy founded by Greg . In the following years he occasionally made comic strips for the daily newspapers Le Soir and De Standaard , until in 1958 he and Greg took over the care of the children's supplement La Libre Junior for the daily newspaper La Libre Belgique , for which he worked as a cartoonist on the series Les Bolides d'argent and Luc Junior took part.

In 1959, in collaboration with Dino Attanasio, the first episode of the comic version by Bob Morane (orig. L'Oiseau de feu ) was created for the magazine Femmes d'Aujourd'hui . Mittéï then became Tibet's assistant and background artist for the Rick Master series for several years . From 1962 he also drew his own series Les 3 A for Tintin magazine , for which Rick Master author André-Paul Duchâteau wrote the scenarios.

This work resulted in a close relationship with the Lombard publishing house, for which he worked almost exclusively for the next 10 years. Among other things, he designed the “Tintin-Auto” section for Tintin and wrote numerous complete stories. He also wrote the gags for the LINE magazine series Nana et Mitsou . From 1966 he developed his series L'Indésirable Désiré for Tintin and from 1969 he succeeded Dino Attanasio as the draftsman for the series Modeste et Pompon (German: Mausi and Paul ).

In the 1970s he switched to Spirou magazine, where he introduced the Bonaventure series in 1976 and realized a comic adaptation of Lettres de mon moulin (English letters from my mill ) by Alphonse Daudet . In addition, he shifted his activities more to work as a copywriter for other draftsmen. Under the pseudonym "Hao" he wrote scenarios for Pierre Seron ( Les Petits Hommes , Ger . Die Minimenschen ), Laudec ( Les Contes de Curé-la-Flûte ), Walthéry ( Natacha , Ger. Natascha ) , Marc Hardy ( Badminton ) and Arthur Piroton ( Les Casseurs de bois ).

In later years he devoted more and more time to watercolor painting, but occasionally continued to realize comics. In 1994 he took over the P'tit Bout de Chique series created by Walthéry for Marsu-Productions .

Mittéï died on April 16, 2001.
