The Mittaghorn , sometimes also referred to as the Mittagshorn , is a 2735 meter high mountain in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Together with the neighboring peaks, it forms Plattenflue (3013 m) and Hoch Ducan (3063 m). the southern boundary of the Sertig Valley and lies in the areas of the municipalities of Davos (German-speaking) and Bergün Filisur (Romansh-speaking).
geology
The Mittaghorn is made up of strong folds and banks, mainly from sedimentary rock . Characteristic features are the heavily jagged ridges and sweeping far from limestone , shale and dolomite existing debris - and scree. At the northeastern foot, the Chüealpbach has dug itself deep into the rock. The rock contains a variety of minerals, for example cerussite (white lead ore) , galena (lead luster), dolomite , quartz , magnetite , smithsonite and sphalerite (zinc blende).
In some rock layers at noon Horn eligible were lead - and zinc-containing passages and veins found. These ores were extracted from two pits at an altitude of 2200 meters in the 1400s, 1500s and 1600s . However, due to decreasing productivity, difficult smelting and storage conditions as well as long transport routes, the mining of the ores turned out to be uneconomical and was finally stopped completely.
