Medium length film

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A medium-length movie or Medium film is a film whose playing time between that of a short film and a long film is located.

Use of language

The term medium length film in the sense of a separate fictional film genre is hardly widespread in the German-speaking area . The category is also not used in the Anglo-Saxon area, especially in the Hollywood system . The term is mainly used in countries with Romance languages , such as French moyen métrage , Italian mediometraggio and Spanish mediometraje . The French film funding authority CNC defines films with a duration between 30 and 60 minutes as moyen métrage . The Brazilian film funding legislation already categorizes films with a duration of more than 15 and up to 60 minutes as média metragem . German-speaking festivals assume running times of between 20 and 69 minutes for medium-length films.

Film festivals

A well-known film festival for medium- length films is the Hors Pistes experimental film festival in Paris , which is organized by the Center Georges Pompidou in cooperation with the French short film agency Agence du court métrage . The Moyen métrage category was set up there for the first time in 2005 . The Festival du Cinéma de Brive - Rencontres du moyen métrage has also been held in France since 2004 . The La Cabina film festival in Valencia has existed in Spain since 2008 and only shows medium- length films between 30 and 60 minutes. Another festival that (besides short films) also specializes in medium- length films is the Festivalul Internaţional de Scurt şi Mediu Metraj NexT in Bucharest .

Since 2007 there has been a separate competition for medium-length films at the FILMZ Festival of German Cinema in Mainz . In 2008, the Max Ophüls Preis film festival introduced medium-length films as a separate competition category. The default runtime here is between 20 and 69 minutes and 25 and 60 minutes, respectively. The Turin Film Festival also had its own competition for medium- length films in 1986 and 1988.

Forum for medium-length films

In order to give the medium-length format its own platform, the forum for medium-length films was launched in March 2018 . Based in Saarbrücken , he is primarily involved in the implementation of medium-length film formats at TV broadcasters and VoD platforms and their reputation at international film festivals. The chair is the curator Marisa Winter , co-founder of the “medium-length film” section of the Max Ophüls Prize film festival .
