Mitzi Green (born Elizabeth Keno on October 22, 1920 in the Bronx , New York , † May 24, 1969 in Huntington Beach , California ) was an American actress and singer.

life and career

Mitzi Green was born into an acting family under the name Elizabeth Keno. She first appeared on vaudeville stages at the age of three ; further appearances during her childhood followed. With the beginning of the sound film , Paramount Pictures was looking for language-experienced child actors and therefore took Green under contract for several films in 1929. In the Mark Twain films Tom Sawyer (1930) and Huckleberry Finn (1931) she played alongside Jackie Coogan the role of Becky Thatcher, who was courted by Tom. In 1931 she took on a larger role in Norman Taurog 's children 's film Skippy, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. In some films like Girl Crazy (1932), the child star also proved herself to be a talented singer. Her imitations were also popular with adult Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo .

With the onset of puberty, Mitzi Green's career in Hollywood ended for the time being, but she was able to turn successfully to Broadway : in 1937 she played the leading role in the world premiere of the famous Rodgers - Hart musical Babes in Arms . In this musical she also sang the songs My Funny Valentine and The Lady Is a Tramp for the first time . Other appearances on Broadway followed, making her a popular musical actress. In 1942 she married the filmmaker Joseph Pevney , they had four children and remained married until her death. For her family, Green largely withdrew from show business, but still made occasional trips to acting until the 1950s: she played a major role in the Abbott and Costello film Lost in Alaska (1951) and took on a leading role in the short-lived sitcom So This Is Hollywood (1955).

Mitzi Green died of cancer in 1969 at the age of only 48. She got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her film work .
