After urban and street photography in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Miyako Ishiuchi's photographic work primarily focuses on the human area, the body, the skin and personal items. Important works are 1 · 9 · 4 · 7 from 1990, the photographic documentation of the skin of the Butoh dancer Kazuo Ōno , as well as Te, Ashi, Niku, Karada (“Hands, Feet, Meat, Body”), the 1995 detailed shots of the body of the Japanese poet Hiromi Itō . 2005 took Miyako Ishiuchi for Japan in its national pavilion at the 51th Biennale of Venice in part. Here she presented her series Mother’s (“der Mutter”, 2002), recordings of her mother’s body and objects. These are clippings of partly intimate clothing or lipsticks and other personal items of her deceased mother. A kind of balance sheet of the life of a woman in the second half of the 20th century, which is drawn very personally, but remains objectively distant in the photographic method. The work Scars , 2005, close-ups of body and skin sections, was also the subject of the exhibition in Venice.
