Miyazaki Hidekichi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Miyazaki Hidekichi ( Japanese 宮 崎 秀吉 ; born September 22, 1910 in Hamamatsu , Shizuoka Prefecture ; † January 23, 2019 in Kyoto ) was a Japanese senior athlete ( runner ).

Miyazaki was the oldest person in the world who regularly participated in rated official athletics events of the national sports federation and achieved top placements there. In 2010 he set a world record of 29.83 seconds in the 100-meter run in the age group of 100 to 104 year olds. In 2013 he achieved a best time for his age with 36.77 seconds.

Life

Miyazaki was a late caller and only started serious athletics after 2000 . At the age of 92 he started the shot put (3 kg). At 100, in 2010, he was the first person of his age to run the 100 meters faster than 30 seconds (29.83) in an official ranking. This world record for the age group of 100-104 year olds was broken in 2015 by Don Pellmann .

In the shot put in the Kyoto Gold Masters 2013 he reached a distance of 3.48 meters. With 100 he reached 3.83 m, with 101 then even 4.02 m. A year later in Saga he reached 3.43 m at the age of 102.

Before participating in competitive sports, Miyazaki was injured frequently, had several accidents and was seriously ill. In 2007, at the age of 97, he was hospitalized with a broken leg for three months and was in a wheelchair for a while. His intensive participation in physical rehabilitation exercises then made him interested in athletics.

Miyazaki measured 1.53 meters in Kyoto in 2013 and weighed 42 kilograms.

Recent successes

On October 6, 2013, Miyazaki achieved a new personal best time over 100 m at the International Gold Masters 2013 in Kyoto in the Nishikyōgoku Stadium with 34.10 seconds.

Due to a measured tail wind of more than the permitted 2.0 m / s, this time did not count as an official record of the athletics association. His official best time for this year was therefore still the 36.77 seconds, which he had achieved a month earlier at the 34th Japanese Masters Athletics Championships in Saga.

At the Kyoto Gold Masters, Miyazaki was the oldest of approximately 870 participants from Japan and other countries, all over 45 years old. The Japanese Gold Masters, an event of the Japanese Athletics Federation, took place for the 33rd time and was launched in 1980 by Oda Mikio , who won Japan's (and East Asian) first Olympic gold in an individual competition ( triple jump ) in Amsterdam in 1928 .

aims

In several interviews that Miyazaki gave after the event in Kyoto in 2013, he stated that his further goals were:

  • run a 100 m run duel with Usain Bolt , the current world record holder for 100 m (9.58 seconds),
  • to set the running world record over 100 m in the age group of 105 to 109 year olds,
  • to see senior athletics become Olympic .
