Mughalsarai (also Mughal Sarai, Moghalsarai ; Hindi : मुग़लसराय Muġalsarāy [ ˌmʊɣʌlsʌˈrɑːj ]) is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with around 110,000 inhabitants (2011 census).

The city is located in the Chandauli district in the east of Uttar Pradesh, around 10 kilometers east of the city of Varanasi (Benares).

Mughalsarai is located on the Grand Trunk Road , which is now the National Highway 2 from Delhi to Kolkata . The city is a major rail hub. At Mughalsarai station, two important railway lines meet, running in an east-west direction through northern India: the line from Delhi via Prayagraj and Patna to Haora and the line from Delhi via Moradabad , Bareilly , Lucknow , Varanasi and Gaya to Haora. Many long-distance trains run via Mughalsarai station, which also supplies the nearby metropolis of Varanasi. One of the largest railway depots in India is connected to Mughalsarai station .

Just south of the Mughalsarai includes railway settlement Mughalsarai Railway Settlement on. It has its own administration and has a population of 27,860 (2001 census).

Mughalsarai is the birthplace of the former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri (1904–1966).
