Muhammad quote from al-Bukhari and Muslim (2011)

On January 9, 2011, when addressing a crowd - according to the New York Times at an event marking the 47th anniversary of the founding of Fatah - Hussein cited a controversial hadith attributed to the Prophet Mohammed and transmitted by al-Bukhari and Muslim , that says:

“The Hour will not come until you fight the Jews. The Jews will hide behind stones or trees. Then the stones or trees will call: Oh Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. "

“The hour (of divine judgment and resurrection) will not come until you have fought the Jews. The Jews will hide behind stones or trees. Then the stones or trees will call out: 'Oh, Muslim, servants of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him.' "

The mufti's comments were broadcast on Palestinian television that same day and then further disseminated on January 15 by Palestinian Media Watch , an Israeli watchdog journalism group. The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the words of the Mufti as "morally abhorrent" and compared his actions with those of the former Mufti of Jerusalem, Amin al-Husseini , who in the 1930s and 40s with Adolf Hitler had allied.

In an interview with the Israeli TV broadcaster Channel 2 on October 25, 2015, Muhammad Ahmad Hussein denied that there was ever a Jewish temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. According to the Grand Mufti, this place was a mosque “3,000 years ago and 30,000 years ago” and would have been “since the creation of the world”. Regarding the al-Aqsa mosque , which was built in the 7th century under the caliph Omar ibn al-Khattab , the mufti claimed that it was "built by Adam or by the angels in his time".

The Grand Mufti was arrested on May 8, 2013 on the occasion of a scuffle between Palestinians and Israelis at the al-Aqsa Mosque , the most important mosque in Jerusalem. He was also temporarily arrested after calling for protests against the police at the entrances to the Temple Mount.
