This is a list of Islamic pilgrimage sites . These include all places to which Muslims pay a religious visit ( ziyāra ) or especially the pilgrimage ( hajj ; see also umra ), especially the great pilgrimage cities of Islam such as the four holy cities of Mecca , Medina , Jerusalem and Hebron or the tombs of the Imams of the Twelve Shiites ( Imamites ) but also many other cities and places fall under this category.

The pilgrimage to Mecca ( Arabic حج, DMG Ḥaǧǧ ) is compulsory for a Muslim as long as he meets the requirements.

There are Islamic pilgrimage sites or holy places in addition to Saudi Arabia , Iraq and Iran in many other countries and regions.
