history
Today's town was probably rebuilt as part of the settlement policy during the Reconquista . In the surveys under King D. Afonso II. 1220 Mondrões was listed as belonging to the municipality of Pena .
Mondrões received its first town charter ( Foral ) on December 15, 1519 from King D. Manuel I , who made it the seat of an administrative district. In 1586 the district was dissolved again, since then Mondrões has been a municipality of the Vila Real district.
Craftsmen and potters settled in this community early on. The ceramic production developed in particular in the village Bisalhães whose inhabitants used black clay, to produce their characteristic ceramics.
In 2016 the black ceramic production of Bisalhães was included in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in urgent need of conservation .
