Abaças (sometimes Abaçãs ) is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Vila Real . 965 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Finds show a settlement in the Bronze Age , and Romans also lived here, especially in today's Bujões. From 711 the Moors also conquered this area. The place name of the community goes back to the Arab- born Ilhabaxa (English: black village).

Abaças was probably re-established in the course of the resettlement after the Reconquista and received city rights in 1200 . It remained an independent circle ( concelho ) until the 15th century. The district was later dissolved, and in 1530 Abaças was already listed as a parish of the Vila Real district.

The listed stone bridge Ponte de Abaçãs or Ponte da Ribeira leads over the Ribeira do Tanha river .

Other architectural monuments of the community include various sacred buildings , including the single-nave parish church Igreja Paroquial de Abaçãs , also named Igreja de São Pedro after its patron saint .
