Together with Reinhard Bütikofer, she has chaired the European Green Party since 2009 and was a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009 . From 2002 to 2009 she was chairman of the group The Greens / European Free Alliance in the European Parliament (Greens / EFA) together with Daniel Cohn-Bendit .
Life
Frassoni began her political engagement in 1983 in the federal-European non-governmental organization Movimento Federalista Europeo (international Union of European Federalists ) and in 1987 was elected Secretary General of the Youth Association of Young European Federalists . In 1989 she graduated from the University of Florence with a degree in political science and worked from 1990 to 1999 as an advisor to the Greens in the European Parliament in Brussels. In 1999 she became the first foreigner on a Belgian list, the list of the Walloon Greens ( Ecolo ), to join the European Parliament. During the legislative period from 1999 to 2004, Frassoni was a member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and an alternate member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, as well as a member of the Delegation for relations with the countries of South America and Mercosur and the joint parliamentary committee with Cyprus .
In 2004 Frassoni entered the list of the Italian Greens and this time moved into the European Parliament for the Italian constituency North-West. As co-chair of the Greens / EFA group, she was also a member of the Conference of Presidents. She was also a member of the Legal Committee and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety . She was also an alternate member of the delegation with Mercosur and the delegation of the Euro- Latin American Parliamentary Assembly . She was also a deputy member of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy . She was also an alternate member of the Delegation for relations with Iran and the Delegation of the Euro- Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly .
On January 15, 2007, Frassoni took office as President of Parliament, but failed with 145 votes against EPP politician Hans-Gert Pöttering . In the European elections in Italy in 2009 , the Italian Greens missed the re-entry into the European Parliament, so that Frassoni was also eliminated. Since 2009 she has been a female co-spokesperson for the European Green Party . In addition, she was long-time President of the European Center for Election Assistance .
In the Italian parliamentary elections in 2013 , Frassoni stood as a candidate for the Sinistra Ecologia Libertà for the Senate . She took first place on the list for the Lombardy region , but did not get a seat. The Italian Greens, however, were part of a coalition of Antonio Ingroia , which calls itself Rivoluzione Civile . The young Italian Greens had therefore asked to resign as co-chair of the European Green Party , which they refused.
