Davos Monstein , in the local dialect i Meschtäin (the emphasis is on -schtäin ), is a village in the canton of Graubünden , Switzerland at 1626 m above sea level. M. , which is a politically organized faction of the Davos landscape .
Monstein is mentioned for the first time in the freedom letter of the feudal lord Walter von Vaz from 1289.
Infrastructure and tourism
The village has two churches, with the old church from 1668 hosting community meetings and from time to time art exhibitions. The new village church from 1896/97 was built in Art Nouveau style. The Monstein school has been run as a comprehensive school since 2006; 16 children are currently being taught there.
In Monstein there are two restaurants in which various Grisons and Monstein specialties, such as Capuns or Monstein beer, are served. The Monsteiner beer comes from one of the highest breweries in Europe.
The best way to get to Monstein is by post bus or on foot, as it is a starting or end point for hikes and mountain tours in summer and ski tours in winter.
To the west of the village is the Silberberg , whose old tunnels can be visited with a guide. The history of the mine is presented in the Schmelzboden mining museum . Every year in August there is a village festival and the open air Monstein organized by the youth .
Public corporation
Davos Monstein since 2019, the only remaining of 1889 from the old neighborhoods formed autonomous, constituted as a public corporation fraction municipalities Davos. While her historical responsibilities have now all passed to the political community , today (2020) it has the following four tasks: It owns the brewery building, the old church, the saw on the Oberalpigerbach and a community freezer. To finance it, it rents the brewery building to Biervision, the saw is leased to the Gysin joinery , the freezer is financed by renting around fifty freezers, and the old church houses a Swisscom antenna in the tower , which generates significant annual income.
