The Mont Bélair is a 485 meter high mountain in the Canadian province of Québec . It is the highest point in the provincial capital Québec and is located about 24 kilometers west of the city center in the Val-Bélair district .

The mountain is located between the valleys of the Rivière Saint-Charles to the east and the Rivière Jacques-Cartier to the west. The source streams of the Rivière du Cap Rouge arise on its southern slope . As one of the southernmost foothills of the Laurentine Mountains , the largely forested Mont Bélair belongs to the geological zone of the Canadian Shield . The predominant rock is anorthosite , which is crossed by feldspar and covered by gravel and sand deposits.

The Mont Bélair was originally called Montagne à Bonhomme , named after the landowner Guillaume Bonhomme, who can be traced back to 1682. As early as the first half of the 18th century, however, the current name prevailed, which goes back to a nearby seigneurie . Today the Mont Bélair is a popular local recreation area . In summer, hiking trails available in the winter cross-country trails . There is also a small swimming pool and a campsite. An area of ​​711 hectares is under nature protection .

The Club d'astronomie Io de Val-Bélair has been operating an observatory on Mont Bélair since 2001 . There is a radio and television transmitter near the summit .
