The Rivière du Cap Rouge is a left tributary of the Saint Lawrence River . It is located in the Capitale-Nationale administrative region of the Canadian province of Québec . The river is 23.5 km long and drains an area of 82 km².
The source is located on the southern slope of Mont Bélair , one of the foothills of the Laurentine Mountains . There are a total of 13 tributaries. The two most important are the Ruisseau d'Eau Claire (5.5 km) and the Ruisseau Bélair (5.7 km), which also arise on the southern slope of Mont Bélair. The Rivière du Cap Rouge flows mainly in a south-easterly direction, whereby it meanders strongly in places . In the upper part, located in the municipality of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures , the area is characterized by agricultural use.
In the lower part of the river flows through the urban area of the arrondissement Sainte-Foy-Sillery-Cap-Rouge of the provincial capital Québec and is crossed by several important traffic routes ( Route 138 , Autoroute 40 ). Shortly before it flows into the St. Lawrence River, at the eponymous Cap Rouge , a railway bridge crosses the river. It is a 1016 m long and 52 m high Trestle Bridge , on which the Québec – La Tuque railway has been running since 1908 . It is still used today by the Canadian National Railway freight trains.
Jacques Cartier founded Charlesbourg-Royal near the mouth of the river in 1541 . The earliest French settlement in North America had to be abandoned after just two years.
