Team competition during cup shooting

The Monte-Kali-Pokalschießen (also Monte-Kali-Pokal or MKP for short ) is an international military shooting sport that has been held annually since 1984. It is organized by the reservist comradeship Giesel , since 1997 in cooperation with the US Army , and held in Wackernheim . It is (in terms of the number of participants and ammunition consumption) the largest shooting with military weapons in Europe.

General

The cup shooting got its name at the original venue after the spoil dump in Neuhof , also popularly known as Monte Kali . The core of the event, which was open to the public until 2007, is the shooting for the Monte Kali Cup . In this team competition, four shooters per team shoot 15 shots each (time limit two minutes per shooter) one after the other at a drop-down target. The target distance is 300 meters. Both hits and the time required, which is recorded individually for each shooter, are evaluated.

Usually the number of participating teams is around 300, for the 25th anniversary in 2008, 450 teams were included in the evaluation. The event always begins on Friday and ends on Saturday evening with the award ceremony. In 2018, on the 35th anniversary, 261 teams fought for the cup.

Supporting program

In addition to the actual competition of the teams, there is a supporting program in which individual shooters have the opportunity to shoot with German, American and other foreign weapons and acquire foreign shooting badges. The profits from the ammunition sale go to various non-profit organizations. In the past these were, for example, the Cash campaign (children's aid program of the Bundeswehr), Fisher House Foundation, Deutsche PTBS Hilfe ( soldiers' relief organization of the Bundeswehr ) or the youth group of the Wackernheim sports club.

The following shooting badges could be acquired so far:

  • M16A2 (US Army Rifle Badge)
  • M249 SAW (US Army "Machine Gun" shooting badge)
  • M9 (US Army "Pistol" shooting badge)
  • MP5 / HK94 (shooting badge "Submachine Gun" of the US Army)
  • UMP (shooting badge "Submachine Gun" of the US Army)
  • M67 dummy ("Grenade" shooting badge of the US Army)
  • M9 (US Air Force "Pistol" shooting badge)
  • M4 ( US Air Force Rifle Badge )
  • M9 (US Marine Corps "Pistol" shooting badge)
  • Glock 17 (shooting badge of the Dutch armed forces)
  • SL-8 (Profits from ammunition sales go to various non-profit organizations)

history

The predecessor of the Monte Kali Cup is the "Shooting Day East Hesse" of the Fulda district group of the reservists' association . In contrast to the Bundeswehr school shooting , the idea arose that the entire team would shoot at a common target carrier with four individual targets printed on each. After shooting, the targets are swapped out of a safe bunker and the following race can continue shooting shortly afterwards while the target carrier is already being prepared for the next team. In the case of the Bundeswehr, the evaluation would take place on the shooting range immediately after shooting. Here, however, it took place together with the team away from the shooting range. This idea was later adopted by other organizers in order to allow a large number of shooters to take part in the competition in a short time.

Until 1998 the event took place on a shooting range of the then Federal Border Police in the Michelsrombacher Wald near Fulda, from 2002 to 2009 on the now former US shooting range Darmstadt Training Support Center near Messel in Hesse.

Since 2007, the Monte-Kali-Pokal has not been held on ring discs, but on hinged target discs and has been held in the Wackernheim Regional Range Complex in Wackernheim near Mainz since 2012 . In addition to the Giesel reservist comradeship, the host has been the US Army's 1-214th Aviation Regiment since 2012.
