Monte Azul is a town in the Beni department in the lowlands of the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Monte Azul is the largest town in the canton of More in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) of San Joaquín in the province of Mamoré . The place is located at an altitude of 142  m at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the Río Iténez , which marks the border with Brazil .

Monte Azul is located in the Moxos plain , with over 100,000 km² one of the largest wetlands on earth. The predominant form of vegetation in the Monte Azul region is that of the tropical savannah .

The temperature fluctuations are low, both during the day and during the year (see climate diagram San Joaquín). The annual average temperature is over 26 ° C, the monthly average temperatures are between 24 and 29 ° C. The annual precipitation is around 1500 mm; the months of June to August are characterized by a dry season in which the little rainfall evaporates quickly.

Transport network

Monte Azul is 304 kilometers as the crow flies north of Trinidad , the capital of the Beni department.

There is no road connection to the transport network. The nearest town is Puerto Siles , which is connected to Trinidad via the Ruta 9 highway and is located about 80 kilometers south of Monte Azul on the Río Mamoré . You can reach Alejandria via the river , which in turn is connected to Monte Azul via unpaved slopes and a crossing of the Río Azul .
