Montecillo Bajo was an independent town in the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Montecillo Bajo was a village in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Tiquipaya in the province of Quillacollo on the 300 km², fertile and densely populated plateau of Cochabamba. The village is located at an altitude of 2692 m on the southern edge of the Tunari National Park (Parque Nacional Tunari, PNT), the ridge of which rises up to 5,000 meters. The stream of the Río Khora forms the eastern edge of the village . Since the 2012 census, Mentecillo Bajo is no longer listed as an independent town, but is now a district of the city of Tiquipaya .

Montecillo Bajo is located in the transition area between the Andes mountain range of the Cordillera Central and the Bolivian lowlands. The climate in the plateau of Cochabamba is a subtropical mountain climate, which is characterized more by fluctuations in precipitation than by temperature differences over the course of the year .
The mean average temperature of the region is around 18 ° C (see climate diagram Cochabamba) and fluctuates only slightly between 14 ° C in June / July and 20 ° C in October / November. The annual precipitation is only around 450 mm, with a pronounced dry season from May to September with monthly precipitation below 10 mm, and a humidity period from December to February with 90 to 120 mm monthly precipitation.

Montecillo Bajo is located at a distance of eleven kilometers by road northwest of the metropolis of Cochabamba , the capital of the department, and sixteen kilometers northeast of the city of Quillacollo .
From the center of Cochabamba, arterial roads lead in a north-westerly direction to Tiquipaya , the central town of the district. Montecillo Bajo is just one kilometer north of Tiquipaya city center.

Due to the historical distribution of the population, the region has a high proportion of Quechua population. In the municipality of Tiquipaya, 58.1 percent of the population speak the Quechua language.
