Montego Joe

Roger "Montego Joe" Sanders (* 1943 in Montego Bay , Jamaica ; † June 28, 2010 in Brooklyn , New York City ) was a Jamaican jazz percussionist and drummer.

Sanders came to New York as a teenager and played throughout his career a. a. in Art Blakeys Afro-Drum Ensemble ( African Beat , Blue Note 1962), also with Ted Curson , Max Roach , Monty Alexander , Phil Upchurch , Dizzy Gillespie , Willis Jackson , Herbie Mann , Harold Vick , Teddy Edwards , George Benson , Jack McDuff , Rufus Harley ( Kings / Queens ) and Johnny Lytle . In 1964 he released the album Arriba! Con Montego Joe for Prestige Records , on which u. a. Chick Corea , Eddie Gomez and Milford Graves performed , followed by the album Wild and Warm . In the mid-1960s he looked after a group of socially disadvantaged young people in Harlem , whom he taught percussion; As HAR-YOU ( Harlem Youth Unlimited ) the formation recorded the album Sounds of the Ghetto Youth for ESP-Disk . The album Voices of East Harlem: Right On Be Free , which was released on Elektra Records , was created with Cornell Dupree . In the field of jazz he was involved in five recording sessions between 1961 and 1966.
