Montenegro is a municipality in the Algarve in southern Portugal . It belongs to the urban area of the district capital Faro and is constantly developing into a residential area of Faro .
The Pinhal de Gambelas spruce forest is located in the municipality. Every year in July, the Faro motorcycle meeting has been held here since 1980 , and with tens of thousands of visitors, it is considered the largest in Europe.
Also the Faro Airport and the Campus Gambelas the University of the Algarve are wholly or partly in the municipality of Montenegro.
history
The village emerged on the outskirts of the city of Faro when fishermen built permanent accommodation here at the beginning of the 20th century in order to sell their catches in Faro from here.
The municipality of Montenegro was created on July 12, 1997, by outsourcing areas of the municipalities of Sé and São Pedro .
