Morbid Florist is an extended play by the US grindcore band Anal Cunt .

History of origin

In 1992 Anal Cunt were looking for a record deal. The two labels Earache Records and Relapse Records , at that time the two biggest labels for Grindcore, came into question. Earache Records initially wanted to hear new songs by the band and so Anal Cunt rented the Iguana Studio in Weymouth , Massachusetts . On the day of recording, however, guitarist John Kozik was indisposed because he had to have kidney stones removed. Tim Morse (drums) and Seth Putnam (vocals, drums) therefore recorded the 14 songs alone. However, John Kozik insisted on being named on the EP and offered the band members to pay a third of the recording costs ( US $ 105 ), so he was listed as a musician.

With the recordings, Anal Cunt managed to get a seven-album contract with Earache Records. However, since Relapse Records still wanted to release something of Anal Cunt, Anal Cunt made the 14 newly recorded songs available to them. The album was released as a 7 '' EP with eight songs and a CD version with 14 songs.

Cover and album title

Relapse Records had a number of death metal bands under contract at the time. Anal Cunt wanted to counter this and came up with an album title consisting of Morbid and a word that was as harmless as possible. After several attempts, they decided on florist . Shortlisted also came Morbid tennis court , as a cover idea should David Vincent ( Morbid Angel ) and Satan are presented as a tennis player. With the album title Morbid Florist , however, they decided on Pete Shelly (ex- Buzzcocks ). The cover of the 12 '' Homosapien is shown . An inverted cross was placed on the artist's forehead. Shelley was chosen, according to Seth Putnam, because he was "the gayest looking person" in his record collection.

Music genre

As on the band's earlier EPs, there are some songs on the album, Some Songs , Even More Songs , Some More Songs and Morrisey , that had few song structures and focused on fast play. They are more like sound eruptions than songs. They are carried by extreme grunts . In fact, Morbid Florist represents a further development in the work of the band. For the first time, song titles are used and song boundaries are recognizable. In fact, it is also the first album with lyrics, before the band's song material consisted of improvised, fast-paced play and Putnam sang or grunted when it seemed appropriate.

Song info

Song # 5 is the first anal cunt piece that has actual song structures and lyrics. The latter is about an ex-girlfriend of Putnam.

The intro of Chump Change and Slow Song from Split 7 '' was already released on a Split 7 '' with Seven Minutes of Nausea .

Unbelievable is a cover version of EMF .

At the intro I Don't Wanna Dance , Putnam tries to sing in the style of Eddy Grant . The title itself is a cover version.

Siege is a medley of the Siege cover versions Drop Dead , The Pentagon and Death and Taxes .

Grateful Dead and Morrissey have nothing to do with those of the band Grateful Dead and musician Morrissey . Morrissey , a typical early anal cunt song, was so named because Putnam had attended a Morrisey concert the day before.

Guy Lombardo was the last song from the 88 song EP The title is a slang expression for a person's stomach.

Bonus Track also comes from the Morbid Florist session, but was left out because Putnam didn't like the vocals of drummer Tim Morse. On September 15, 1997, the piece was remixed by Putnam and Bill T. Miller .
