The scene of the crime was the parking lot of the Lübars outdoor pool

The murder of Christin R. occurred on the night of June 20-21, 2012 in Berlin-Lübars . The victim was a 21-year-old horse hostess. On January 29, 2015, the Berlin Regional Court found five people guilty of murder or of incitement to murder the 21-year-old. The judges came to the conclusion that the killing was out of greed and sentenced the defendants Robin and Cornelia H., Steven M. and Sven L. to life imprisonment . Robin and Cornelia H. also found out that their guilt was particularly serious. The defendant Tanja L. received a prison sentence of 14 years and six months. The judgment became final in 2016.

In 2018, the case was processed in a radio documentary and a documentary for television.

prehistory

Christin R., who grew up in Lübars, completed an apprenticeship as a horse manager on a farm in Oranienburg , where she met the two-year-old show jumping rider Robin H. with whom she entered into a relationship in spring 2011. Robin H., who comes from Leck (North Friesland) , had completed his training as a rider in Münsterland and dreamed of acquiring his own riding stables and becoming wealthy by breeding and selling high-quality horses. In autumn 2011 the couple moved to a horse farm with 2.5 hectares of land in Wutzetz im Havelland , which the bank financial advisor Cornelia H. - Robin H.'s mother - had leased to help her son make his dream come true. After Cornelia H. got into financial difficulties and could no longer pay the monthly rent, the landlord of the farm terminated the lease. Cornelia and Robin H. were also unable to settle the bills for electricity, car insurance and the veterinarian at the time. The two had already had financing problems in the past when they planned to buy a farm, which is why the purchase contract that had already been signed had been reversed.

In November 2011, Christin R. agreed to take out term life insurance for just under 250,000 euros to insure Robin H. - to whom she was now engaged - in the event of her death. To do this, she had herself examined by a doctor and signed the insurance contract on December 1, 2011. As of December 2011, Robin and Cornelia H. took out seven term life insurance policies with various insurance companies for Christin R. through an insurance broker . The total amount of the insurance was over two million euros. Robin H. was the beneficiary of all contracts. The insurance contracts had been signed with forged signatures without the knowledge of Christin R.

Failed murder attempts

On April 4th (according to other sources on April 9th) 2012, Cornelia H. made a first murder attempt according to the judgment of the Berlin Regional Court in order to get her son the money from term life insurance. While Robin H. drove to a video-monitored gas station to get an alibi, his mother Christin R. suddenly stabbed a knife in the back at home, but she did not injure any internal organs. Christin R. defended herself, whereupon H. left her and showed himself confused and disoriented. When Robin H. returned, he took Christin R. to a hospital, where she had to be treated in the intensive care unit for several days. After the attack, Christin R. moved back to her parents in Lübars and filed a criminal complaint against the mother of her fiancé. The investigation into dangerous bodily harm that was then initiated was finally discontinued because the police assumed at the time that Cornelia H. was in a mentally disturbed state at the time of the crime. Cornelia H. claimed to have suffered a kind of blackout . Despite the incident, Christin R. did not break off contact with Robin H.

According to the confession of the accused Tanja L., another attempted killing took place on June 8, 2012. Robin H. had asked the hobby rider L. , who came from Dorsten , then in her mid-twenties, to poison Christin R. and give her 50,000 euros in return provided in promising. Tanja L., who was hoping for a future together with Robin H., agreed to meet with Christin R. in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant on the pretext of wanting to buy a horse. There the two women drank champagne from plastic cups. Tanja L. had added potassium chloride to Christin R.'s cup , which Robin H. had bought in a pharmacy. Before that, he and his mother had done internet research for drugs and poisons. In the later murder trial, Cornelia H. claimed that the potassium chloride was not intended for Christin R., but as a food supplement for horses. The second attempted murder also failed because potassium chloride had to be injected into the bloodstream to be lethal .

After the second failed murder attempt, Tanja L. asked her brother Sven L., who lived in Dortmund, if he knew anyone who would commit contract killing . Sven L., who had a criminal record for minor offenses, then made contact with Steven M., whom he had met in an assisted living facility . The then 22-year-old M., who had a criminal record for property damage, was described by witnesses as “in need of support” and “aggressively inhibited” and declared himself ready to murder Christin R. for 500 euros. Sven L. also received 500 euros for the mediation. Tanja L. picked up Steven M. by car from Dortmund and drove him back from Berlin after the crime.

Sequence of events

Robin H. spent the night of June 19-20, 2012 with Christin R. in her parents' house. A few hours later he sent an SMS to Tanja L., which said: “No failure please, a third time is impossible.” On the afternoon of June 20, 2012, Robin H. and Christin R. agreed to meet in the parking lot of the To meet the outdoor swimming pool of Lübars, where Steven M. waited in a hiding place to be able to carry out the murder. Since Christin R. appeared on the date with a friend and the two women left after a brief conversation with Robin H., it initially seemed as if the third attempted murder would also fail.

Robin H. called Christin R. and ordered her to the parking lot again. He claimed that he wanted to give her a check because he still owed her money, and that Tanja L. was also there and would be happy to see you again. In the opinion of the court, H. wanted to lull the victim into safety. Christin R. was innocent and defenseless because she trusted Tanja L. Around 10 p.m. Christin R. returned - this time unaccompanied - to the swimming pool, where she was attacked by Steven M. and strangled with a rope. Robin H. and Tanja L. were present during the victim's minute-long agony. Sven L. was also at the scene of the crime at this point, as the evaluation of radio data from his cell phone later revealed.

Arrests

The 21-year-old's body was found on the morning of June 21, 2012 by a walker. The police, which initially assumed a "relationship act", arrested Robin H. as an urgent suspect on the same day. One week after the murder, Steven M., who, according to witnesses, is said to have boasted of the crime, was arrested in his apartment in Dortmund, Cornelia H. was arrested two weeks later. As the investigation progressed and Robin and Cornelia H.'s financial difficulties became known, the officials finally came to the conclusion that the victim had been killed maliciously and out of greed. According to a crime researcher quoted by Tagesspiegel and questioned about the case, greed could develop into “enormous hostility” that could lead to “insidious, disgraceful and evil” treatment of the selected victim. In the murder case of Christin R., according to one of the investigators, the perpetrators were "extremely hardy, brutal and repulsive".

Criminal trial

As of March 21, 2013, the perpetrators had to answer before the 35th large criminal chamber - jury chamber - of the Berlin Regional Court. The victim's parents appeared as joint plaintiffs . In the course of the trial, the defendants incriminated each other. Only the comprehensive confession of Tanja L. provided information about the course of events. She described herself as a "simple and easy-to-influence woman" who was willing to do anything to win the affection of Robin H. As a reason for her confession, she stated: “I wanted to get the pictures out of my head.” Robin H.'s defense attorney, however, accused Tanja L. of wanting to “pull her head out of the loop”. She was jealous and greedy and therefore had motives for the act herself. She was also not controlled by Robin H., but asked her brother on his own initiative to establish contact with Steven M.

Testimony by Sabrina S.

During the trial, the summons of the then 43-year-old witness Sabrina S. caused a sensation, as Robin H. had alleged to several people in the past - including Christin R. - that S. was his deceased ex-wife. In the main hearing, S. testified that she met H. in 2009 at a riding event in North Rhine-Westphalia and that he had looked after her horses. However, she was apparently neither dead nor ever married to him. But she confirmed that she had had a brief flirtation with him. The financial accountant described H. as a notorious liar who tends to overestimate himself and is not particularly intelligent. He lives in a fantasy world and she advised him to see a psychologist, which he refused. However, H. was also "courteous and helpful" and she could not imagine that he was capable of such an act. After his arrest, S. had tried to find a criminal defense lawyer for H., got him clothes and settled outstanding bills for him. They were on friendly terms and had telephoned each other almost every day before the crime, but H. never mentioned that he and Christin R. were a couple, only referred to them as his "groom".

judgment

On January 29, 2015, the Berlin Regional Court sentenced the defendants Robin and Cornelia H. to life imprisonment for murder and double attempted murder. The judges held Robin and Cornelia H., 26 and 57 years old at the time of the verdict, to be "the driving forces" behind the murder plot and determined the particular gravity of the guilt in both of them, so that a suspension of life imprisonment for probation after expiry the minimum period of service of 15 years is out of the question.

Steven M. and Sven L., aged 24 and 25, were found guilty of murder and incitement to murder, respectively, and were also sentenced to life imprisonment. Tanja L., 29 years old, was found guilty of murder and attempted murder, but was only sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison. In her case, the court refrained from imposing a life sentence, as she had made a significant contribution to the investigation of the crime with her confession and her statements on the contributions of the other defendants. According to the court, L. was manipulated by Robin H. and used as a tool.

The reasoning for the verdict stated: “With unrestrained greed for money and a feeling of coldness that could hardly be surpassed, a human life was destroyed.” The presiding judge said: “A group of normal, average, inconspicuous people had got together to commit a terrible crime [... ] With an unconditional will to annihilate, completely unaffected by previously unsuccessful murder attempts.
