history
The Morgetshofsee is a dead lake. It was formed after the last ice age, the Würme Ice Age, around 18,000 years ago. After the melting of the Rhine glacier leftover ice remaining formed the basin of the lake, where the water lay still. Dead ponds have no surface drainage, the water level changes following the amount of precipitation. After extensive rainfall, the surface can increase considerably. After longer periods of drought, the lake retreats completely into its traditional hollow. The changing water level is an important factor that the Morgetshofsee is home to such a diverse flora and fauna.
Wildlife
The Morgetshofsee is an amphibian spawning water of national importance. So far, eight different amphibian species have been identified: common frog , water frog , agile frog , tree frog , mountain newt , crested newt , pond newt and common toad .
The lake is used as a breeding ground for some water birds. Mallards , coots , little grebes and mute swans live there . Not as a breeding bird, but as an amphibian hunter, the gray heron romps around the lake. Red-backed red backs and goldhamers breed in the area . Winter guests are tufted ducks and pochards .
In addition, dragonflies and dragonflies live on the lake.
