Moritz Goldschmidt

Moritz Goldschmidt (born October 15, 1863 in Bischhausen near Eschwege , † September 7, 1916 in Geisa ) was a German teacher and botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ M.Goldschm. ".

Live and act

Goldschmidt taught at the Israelite school in Geisa in the Rhön since 1885 , where he made friends with the pharmacist Adalbert Geheeb , who worked as a botanist. Goldschmidt dealt intensively with the native flora and published parts of the multi-volume flora of the Rhön Mountains from 1900 to 1915 . So far it is the only work on the entire flora of the Rhön. The series should be continued by the teacher and Goldschmidt's student Otto Arnold from Unterweid . However, this fell in the First World War . His collection, consisting of 300 folders with a total of more than 20,000 individual plant preparations, was integrated into the Herbarium Senckenbergianum in Frankfurt am Main .

Goldschmidt died in 1916 after suffering from diabetes for a long time , after initially being completely blind. His grave is in the Jewish cemetery in Geisa.
