Moritz Jahn (born March 27, 1884 in Lilienthal , † January 19, 1979 in Göttingen ) was a German writer who wrote mainly in Low German .

Life

Moritz Jahn, who was initially a primary school teacher , studied German and art history in Göttingen from 1921 to 1925 . Until 1943 he was active in the school service, most recently as rector in Geismar , and after his retirement in 1944 became a freelance writer.

Jahn was a member of the NSDAP between 1933 and 1935 and in 1941 took part in the Weimar Poets 'Meeting organized by Goebbels , at which the National Socialist European Writers' Association was founded. Jahn gave a speech at the conference in which he sharply attacked the literary emigrants. During the National Socialist era , he was made an honorary doctorate from Göttingen University in 1944.

In the Göttingen district of Geismar (Göttingen) , the Moritz-Jahn-Haus is named after him.

Jahn's work, which is mainly written in the Low German language, includes above all poetry - including ballads - fairy tales, short stories and historical stories. Sometimes also in letter form.

My interest in this language was not historical, but rather aesthetic; I felt it was bursting with artistic possibilities that, in my opinion (...) had hardly been seen,

the poet describes his drive as an ambitious writer to devote himself to Low German. Parts of his work, which is also mainly located in the Low German region, can be characterized as brooding or tragic, while others are full of satirical or comic elements. Jahn's favorite topic is the life of eccentric people and their failure in society. B. in the collection of poems and ballads Ulenspegel and Jan Dood (1933). Other well-known works are the short story Frangula (1933), the novella De Moorfro (1950) and Lucifer (1956), again a short story. The volume of poems Unkepunz was equally important . A German Face (1931) and Im weiten Land (1938), a collection of stories. His story The story of the people on the Outer Foehrde belonged to the literature used for propaganda purposes under National Socialism, which was printed in higher editions than usual.
