Moriz Melzer

Moriz Melzer (* 22. December 1877 in Albendorf , Bohemia , † the 30th June 1966 in Berlin ) was a German painter and graphic artist of Expressionism .

life and work

Active as a porcelain painter until 1890 , Melzer attended the art academy in Weimar between 1906 and 1908 , where he was a student of Ludwig von Hofmann .

With the move to Berlin in 1908, he integrated himself into the capital's art life. In 1909 he exhibited at the Berlin Secession , but was already out of jury a year later. As a co-founder of the New Secession, he set up the school for fine and applied arts together with Georg Tappert in 1910/11 . In 1912 a study visit to Paris followed, which was financially supported by the Swiss collector Walter Minnich. To the approval of the critics, Melzer exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.

Moriz Melzer was a member of the German Association of Artists . In 1913 he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize.

After the First World War, Melzer was one of the founders of the revolutionary November group , which he chaired in 1922. He took part in the group's exhibitions from 1919 to 1922, 1926, 1927, 1929 and 1931.

From 1921 to 1943 he was a teacher for portrait , nude , composition , decorative painting and stage design at the Reimann School , and headed the annual “summer studios” of the Reimann School and painting trips to southern countries.

In 1917 Melzer designed the Peter Behrens room at the exhibition of the Deutscher Werkbund . Melzer was also a member of the Prague Secession .

National Socialism

During the National Socialist era, his pictures were classified as degenerate and removed from museums. Melzer was dismissed from teaching. He lived in Berlin-Schöneberg, Innsbrucker Strasse 4, until his death.

He is buried in the forest cemetery in Zehlendorf . His grave is dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave .
