Moritzdorf is a district of the community Sellin on Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The place is located south of the Selliner See on the Baaber Bek and is a popular destination for holidaymakers from the surrounding Baltic Sea resorts.

history

Moritzdorf was founded in 1841 by Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus . Some of the buildings in the village today date from this period. In the idyllic place close to the water, yachtsmen, fishermen, wheelwright and boat builders, but also stone dawners , shoemakers and tailors, were settled as new settlers . The prince gave each house a total of 7.5 acres of arable, meadow and garden land. As early as 1844, the memorabilia book of the church in Lancken-Granitz reported that the houses in Moritzdorf had become objects of speculation and therefore had frequently changed hands.

Moritzdorf belonged to the Altensien manor district . In 1867 the place had 19 households with a total of 80 inhabitants in 10 houses. On June 21, 1886 a fire destroyed 5 houses. The spread of the fire was favored by the reed roofs, a north wind and the long drought that had prevailed before.

From 1887 there were plans to bridge the Baaber Bek running east of the village, the connection from the Selliner See to the Greifswalder Bodden . However, the project was not carried out. On the east side of the Baaber Bek, the Baaber bulwark belonging to Baabe was built . In 1891, however, the license to operate a rowing ferry was given, which has since crossed the narrow Baaber Bek. The first owner of the Moritzdorf ferry was the dealer Martin Looks . At the end of the 19th century, when sailing on Rügen was at its peak, several seamen lived in Moritzdorf. Two fishmongers had also settled.

In 1901 Wilhelm Möller built an excursion restaurant on an elevation above the town . The descendants of Wilhelm Möller now live in Brunsbüttel and Kiel. Due to its beautiful location and the unobstructed view from there over the Mönchgut peninsula and the Having , the Wilhelmshöhe restaurant became a popular destination for bathers from the surrounding Baltic Sea resorts. The restaurant, later renamed Moritzburg , still exists today.

Moritzdorf had a post office from 1890 to 1922 . In the time of the GDR , the tourist rooms in the village achieved top prices and were often rented out years in advance. As part of a regional reform, Moritzdorf was incorporated into Sellin with Altensien, Neuensien and Seedorf on January 1, 1962 .

After 1990 the tourist development of the place continued. At the southern end of the village, a reed-roofed hotel with a restaurant was built to blend in with the landscape.

Economy / tourism

In Moritzdorf, tourism dominates due to the natural location of the place. In addition to several restaurants there is a small hotel that is open all year round. Above the village is the Moritzburg , an excursion restaurant open from April to October with a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. Moritzdorf forms a traffic-calmed zone. At the northern end of the village there is a larger car park from which visitors can easily reach the village on foot.

Another tourist attraction is the rowing boat that crosses the Baaber Bek as a ferry for pedestrians and cyclists between the Baaber Bollwerk and Moritzdorf .
