Seedorf is a village belonging to the municipality of Sellin on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

location

Seedorf lies south of Neuensien . The development of both places merges into one another. The place stretches along the eastern bank of the Lanckener Bek which connects the Neuensiener See to the north with the Having as part of the Baltic Sea. The place represents a natural harbor , which is mainly used for tourism today.

There is only an access option for motor vehicles via Neuensien. The road ends in Seedorf. For pedestrians and cyclists there is a bridge over the Lanckener Bek towards Preetz and Burtevitz . Other hiking trails lead south and east towards Moritzdorf .

history

The area of today's Seedorf with its location on the Lancker Bek flow channel, which was created in the last Ice Age , was particularly suitable for shipbuilding. On behalf of Count Friedrich zu Putbus , the ship's carpenter Jakob Jantzen Lundberg from Pruchten bei Barth built a seaworthy ship here in 1782 .

When the real estate of the House of Putbus , which also included the Seedorf area, was reorganized in 1809, his son, Prince Wilhelm Malte zu Putbus , determined that the area should be reserved for the settlement of fishermen and boatmen.

Seedorf is mentioned for the first time in 1812 in the baptismal register of the Lancken-Granitz village church . During the Napoleonic Wars , the Swedish fleet used Seedorf as a natural harbor to handle troop and food transports.

port

In order to facilitate the loading and unloading of the ships docked in Seedorf, the port was fortified with a bulwark . Port fees were also introduced. With the advent of bathing tourism in the Baltic seaside resorts, the port also experienced an upswing. Since 1885 Seedorf has been a regular stop on the Hebe steamship , which went from Lauterbach to Mönchgut , so that bathers reached their destination via Seedorf. The building materials required for the construction of the then newly built hotels were also handled with barges via Seedorf. However, with the introduction of the Rasender Roland small train , this economic importance of the Seedorf port was lost.

Shipyards

Karl David Looks , son of a pilot from Mönchgut, and Joachim Christian Krüger , boat builder from Sellin, each founded a shipyard in Seedorf in 1861. While the Looksche shipyard only existed until 1863, the Kruger shipyard acquired a good national reputation. Seedorf became an important location for shipbuilding in the Baltic Sea region. With the advent of iron steamships, however, the traditional handicraft Kruger shipyard fell behind. In 1912 Moritz Koldevitz from Binz bought the shipyard. The focus of activity shifts to a sawmill and construction company. Nevertheless, new ships are still being built. The gaff schooner Fürst Franz zu Putbus was built in 1924 and the last ship in 1925 was the Galeasse Seedorf .

Seedorf was also the home of boatmen for a long time. The Seedorfer Schifferverein founded in 1892 had 30 captains. Since 1897, introduced by the Behrendt brothers from Fuhlendorf near Barth, Seedorf has known the tradition of popular fun of cutting down the barrel .

In 1906 the bridge over the Lancker Bek was built by the Greifswald company Spruth .

Seedorf was the eponymous place of the community Seedorf. In addition to Seedorf, Burtevitz , Neuensien, Preetz, Sandort and Zarnekow were part of the 3.4 km² area . On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Burtevitz was incorporated. As part of a regional reform, Seedorf was incorporated into Sellin with Altensien , Moritzdorf and Neuensien on January 1, 1962 .

Economy and events

Due to its scenic location a bit away from the large Baltic Sea resorts, tourism has developed a little more quietly. From 1957 to 1990 a Karl-Marx-Städter Advanced High School in Seedorf had a large summer camp. There are several small restaurants and hotels. The port of Seedorf, which is particularly well frequented by those seeking relaxation, is important for the townscape and the economy.

Every mid-August the sailing regatta Rund Stubber takes place from Seedorf .
