Castles Upper and Lower Montani

Morter is a village in the Vinschgau in South Tyrol and a fraction of the market town of Latsch . The village is located on the orographic right , southern side of the Adige Valley at the entrance to the Martell Valley . The Plima flows just east of the village. Behind the town center, the slopes of the Nördersberg rise up, which are protected in the Stilfserjoch National Park .

The settlement is mentioned as early as the 9th century - in the Churrätisches Reichsgutsurbar from 842/43 - as in villa Mortario ("village of the mortar makers ", ie lime burners ).

The small village under the impressive ruins of the castles Obermontani and Untermontani (today ruins) and the St. Stephen chapel offers a great wealth of Romanesque and Gothic art in a very small space. One of the oldest copies of the Nibelungenlied (1323) comes from the Obermontani library and is now in the Berlin-Dahlem State Archives .

Castle chapel St. Stephan

Castle chapel St. Stephan

The above-mentioned St. Stefan castle chapel is one of the most beautiful churches in South Tyrol. Your frescoes date from the 15th century of the Lombard, Dutch and Bavarian schools. On the north wall is a cycle of 12 pictures on the legend of St. Stephen , the east wall shows the legend of St. Ursula . On the south wall there are hunting scenes of St. Hubertus and on the west side impressive art paintings of the Last Judgment .

Chapel of St. Vigilius in the Anger

Chapel of St. Vigilius in the Anger

The chapel of St. Vigilius im Anger , also known as St. Vigiliuskirchlein or Blasiuskirch, is a Romanesque chapel.

The small chapel is a Romanesque three-icon building , this design is unique in Vinschgau. After it was assumed for a long time that it was modeled on the Müstair Chapel of the Holy Cross , Graubünden , it is now assumed that it was built first. In the church there is a line of writing in the nave that reports on the consecration on September 29, 1080 by Bishop Heinrich I of Trento.

The church saints Vigilius and Blasius, which are not usual in the Vinschgau, point out, like the consecration by the Bishop of Trient, that this was a property of Trento in the diocese of Chur .

Around 1400 a donor couple had a crucifixion group with a church patron attached to the facade.

Only a few frescos have been preserved in the chapel, some of which have been painstakingly restored by the conservator Carl Atz .
