The Moskvich-2140 went into series production in 1976 and was intended to replace the Moskvich-412 , which was subsequently built at Ischmasch until 2001. The vehicle is largely based on its predecessor and was therefore already technically out of date at the time of production. Mainly details on the body were changed, for example the radiator grille. In addition, the basic version received an improved braking system.

The vehicle is a four-door sedan with a self-supporting body, a longitudinally installed front engine and rear-wheel drive. The front wheels are each suspended from two triangular wishbones of unequal length with coil springs and hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers. The rear axle is a rigid axle that is suspended from longitudinally installed leaf springs. The Moskvich has worm steering as standard , from 1985 a rack and pinion steering was also available on request . The brake system is a servo-assisted hydraulic dual-circuit brake system with disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The mechanically operated parking brake acts on the rear wheels. As standard, the trolley has 13 in (330 mm) wheels  .

The Moskwitsch is driven by a liquid-cooled gasoline engine having four in series arranged cylinders. It has a displacement of 1478 cm 3 and 55 kW at 5800 min -1 , the maximum torque of 112 N · m at 3400 min -1 given. The mixture is prepared with a carburetor. The camshaft, driven by a timing chain, is built into the cylinder head ( OHC ) and operates the valves via rocker arms. The inlet and outlet are opposite on different sides of the engine. The ignition distributor and the oil pump for the wet sump lubrication system are located at the ends of an inclined shaft that is driven by the crankshaft via helical gears. The engine transmits the torque to the rear wheels via a single-disc dry clutch and a manual four-speed gearbox with an H-stick shift. The top speed is specified at 140 km / h, the fuel consumption at around 8.8 l / 100 km.

Model variants

The Moskvich-2140 was available in different model variants and modifications, the list does not claim to be exhaustive.

  • Moskvich-2137 - model as a station wagon, technically otherwise largely identical to the sedan.
  • Moskvich-2140 - basic model (sedan), built from 1975/76 to 1988.
  • Moskvich-21401 - With special equipment as an ambulance.
  • Moskvich-21403 - With hand control for war invalids .
  • Moskvich-21406 - For use in rural areas. The engine was throttled to 68 HP (50 kW) and thus tolerated gasoline with 76 octane, at the same time the brake system was upgraded to drum brakes and the suspension improved, and sturdy tow hooks were attached.
  • Moskvich-2140-117 "Ljuks" - Also known as Moskvich-2140SL or Moskvich-1500SL , with a raised interior.
  • Moskvich-2734 - van based on the station wagon with a closed body and only two seats.
