Surname

The origin of the name Mount Bailey is not fully understood. On old maps it is shown as "Old Baldy" or "Old Bailey". The latter was probably caused by errors in the maps. The low vegetation and therefore bare-looking summit is an explanation for the older name Old Baldy ( old bald head ). A mountain-related person named Bailey could not be found. In 1992, the Oregon Geographic Names Board decided to officially name Mount Bailey in honor of the naturalists Vernon and Florence Bailey . According to William G. Steel , who was instrumental in setting up the nearby Crater Lake National Park , the name of the Klamath for the volcano Youxlokes was , which roughly means medicine mountain . Medicine men climbed Mount Bailey to fast at the summit and to get in touch with higher beings of their faith.

geology

Mount Bailey is part of the Cascade Range . There are several small cinder and ash cones in the vicinity . Similar to Mount Thielsen, the volcano has quite steep slopes in the immediate vicinity of the summit. Studies have shown that the cone is no more than 100,000 years old. Originally it released basalt andesite , but later only andesite .

The shield volcano is crowned by a cone formed by pyroclastic deposits . Today this forms the over 600 m high elevation that is visible from afar. The cone is likely to have emerged during several eruption phases. Mount Bailey has not been active since around the early Pleistocene . This roughly corresponds to the time of the first volcanic activity on Mount Mazama, which has also been extinct . This is located 20 km to the southeast.

use

Mount Bailey is a popular winter sports area. In summer, it also attracts hikers who appreciate the view of nearby Diamond Lake . The summit of the volcano can be reached via an 8 km long path. The surrounding area features extensive forests of mountain hemlocks , western Weymouth pines and Shasta firs .
