Mr. Rock 'n' Roll: The Alan Freed Story (Original title: Mr. Rock 'n' Roll: The Alan Freed Story ) is an American television film by Andy Wolk from 1999 based on the novel Big Beat Heat: Alan Freed and the Early Years of Rock and Roll by John A. Jackson on the life of DJ Alan Freed .
action
Alan Freed works as a radio DJ at WGBC in Cleveland , Ohio , and as a DJ at dance events, and mostly plays big band records. At a wedding, a young guest swaps a single already on the turntable for a rhythm 'n' blues record. The reaction is extremely divided, the young people dance and are enthusiastic, while the older ones, outraged about this “black” music, threaten Freed with being kicked out. After all, this music is boycotted by the popular radio stations.
When Freed visits a record store, he first notices that the Rhythm 'n' Blues section is much more frequented than the rest of the store. Inspired by these two events, Freed convinces the owner of the record shop to sponsor his show and also persuades the initially skeptical owner of the radio station. The success of the show leads Freed to throw a dance party in the Cleveland Arena with the big stars of the scene. There has never been a comparable event of this size.
Freed finds personal happiness in his relationship with the dance teacher Jackie, whom he marries. Freed moves to a larger radio station in New York and meets the seedy record producer Morris Levy . Freed also finances dance parties and concerts in New York, which are a great success and culminate in an event on Broadway . Unfortunately, the relationship with Jackie deteriorated during this time.
Levy demands from Freed that, in return for his financial support, he prefer to play performers on his labels. At the height of his career, Freed was making music films in Hollywood, hosting a television show and embarking on a successful tour across the United States with artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis , Little Richard and Buddy Holly .
In Boston , however, the concert is canceled by the police during the performance of Jerry Lee Lewis. There is a tremendous commotion. As a result, the rest of the tour will be canceled by the remaining venues. Freed is charged with trespassing by the prosecutor. However, the charges are dropped due to a lack of evidence. However, the city of New York is investigating Freed because of the Payola scandal.
When Freed begins a relationship with a young singer Denise Walton , his wife leaves him. Levy distances himself from Freed and testifies in court against Freed in the Payola trial. Freed also loses his job at the radio station.
