Was this necessary? is an educational film by the DEFA studio for popular science films by Wolfgang Heyer from 1965 .

action

Almost half of all deaths are caused by heart and circulatory diseases , three times more than caused by cancer .

In order to promote a healthy way of life, the film shows the causes of a heart attack . The work performance of the heart and its energy supply by the coronary arteries are shown by animated drawings. The regulating autonomic nervous system with the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves is shown by a test to determine the increase in heart rate and blood pressure without physical stress , but through psychological stress . It is recommended not to constantly succumb to the hectic pace of modern life and the constant willingness to perform, but to look for the alternation between tension and relaxation, because lack of exercise greatly increases the risk of vascular disease.

These medical findings are presented in a generally understandable manner for practical explanation by means of short scenes with actors between the animated sections of the film.

production

Was this necessary? was shot in a mixture of real film and animated graphics as a black and white film on behalf of the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum Dresden and was released on November 26, 1965.

The tricks were designed by Fritz Luther and the scenario was created by Kurt Weiler, while the dramaturgy was in the hands of Heinz Haffke. Stanley Ernest Strauzenberg was consulted for medical advice and the texts were written by Rudolf Schmal.
