Muckle Skerry is an island in Orkney . It is the largest of the Pentland Skerries , a group of four archipelagos in the Pentland Firth . At a length of 1.1 km, Muckle Skerry is a maximum of 600 m wide. There are three small, nameless lakes in the northwest. Muckle Skerry is located 4.5 kilometers south of South Ronaldsay and 7.1 kilometers northeast of Duncansby Head , the north-easternmost tip of mainland Scotland . While there were 17 residents in 1881, Muckle Skerry is uninhabited today. A landing place for mooring boats is on the northeast coast.
history
There are traces of earlier settlement on Muckle Skerry. It is not certain whether the remains of a brochure are located near the north-eastern headland known as the “tennis court” . Three structures near the lighthouse, some of which have been badly damaged, are probably Cairns . Traces of settlement can be found mainly along the north coast.
In 1794, the 36 m high Pentland Skerries Lighthouse was one of the first lighthouses in Scotland to be built on Muckle Skerry. Today the tower is automated and is the only surviving structure on the island. It is listed as an architectural monument in the highest Scottish monument category A.
In 1964 the GDR merchant ship Käthe Niederkirchner crashed and sank on the west side of the island . The entire crew was saved by the lighthouse keepers.
