La Muga is a river in northern Catalonia .

The Muga rises in the Pyrenees on the Pla de la Muga (1,186 m) in the Montnegre Mountains south of the French border and flows into the Mediterranean Sea in the Gulf of Roses . The river length is 58 kilometers and the average flow velocity is 3.34 m³ / s (measuring location: Castelló d'Empúries ).

On the way to the Alt Empordà plain, the Muga is crossed by the L ' Arnera tributary and other small tributaries from the axial zone of the Pyrenees, such as the Roc de Frausa , the Serra de les Salines and the Serra de l'Albera , fed. After 5.5 kilometers of flowing through deep valleys, the Muga is interrupted by a dam in the Boadella Gorge . The Muga then reaches the protected wetland Aiguamolls de l'Empordà ( Parc Natural dels Aiguamolls de l'Empordà ) 52.5 kilometers down the valley in the Empordà region in Catalonia and flows into the Mediterranean Sea together with the Fluvià river .

In October 1940 the Muga caused a catastrophic flood in the Ampurdán plain .
