Muhammad Abd-Al-Rahman Barker

M. A. R. Barker (* 3. November 1930 as Philip Barker in Idaho ; † 16th March 2012 ; pseudonym : MAR Barker ) was an American professor of Urdu and South Asian Studies and writer.

Life

Muhammad Abd-Al-Rahman Barker was born in Idaho as Philip Barker, the son of a headmaster of British ancestry. He enrolled at Washington State University and received 21 years, a scholarship of the Fulbright Program to Indian languages to study. After graduating, he went to the University of California, Berkeley for further studies , where he wrote his dissertation on the language of the Klamath . Barker initially taught at the Islamic Institute at McGill University in Montreal from 1958 to 1960 , then went to the University of the Punjab in Lahore for two years as part of his research work on teaching materials for the Urdu language, and in 1972 became head of the department for South Asian Studies at the university of Minnesota . After his retirement, he and his wife stayed in Minneapolis . Barker changed his name from Philip to Muhammad Abd-Al-Rahman as part of his conversion to Islam on his first trip to India in 1951.

Scientific work

In 1963 and 1964, Barker published a dictionary and a grammar for the Klamath language and developed a pronunciation system for Klamath , which representatives of this people consider to be an accurate and faithful reproduction of all possible sounds of that language. In 1967 he and his project group at the Islamic Institute presented the three-part standard work A Course in Urdu , which was followed by three further publications as language materials on Urdu by 1969 ( An Urdu newspaper reader , A Reader of Modern Urdu Poetry and An Urdu Newspaper Word-Count ) .

Tékumel

In the 1970s, Barker developed the fictional world Tékumel as part of a pen & paper role-playing game , for which he also published five fantasy novels. In addition to drafting a history of the world of Tékumel and various peoples, he also invented the constructed language Tsolyáni , which he described in The Tsolyáni language published in 1978 .
