Munawir Sjadzali

H. Munawir Sjadzali (born November 7, 1925 in Kabupaten Klaten , Jawa Tengah ; † July 23, 2004 in Jakarta ) was an Indonesian politician and diplomat who, among other things, was ambassador to Kuwait , the United Arab Emirates , Bahrain and between 1976 and 1980 Qatar and Minister of Religion from 1983 to 1993.

Life

Sjadzali attended various religious schools such as the Madrasah Thanawiyah Al-Islam , the Pesantren Membaul Ulum and the Sekolah Tinggi Islam Mambaul Ulum in Surakarta , which he graduated in 1943. He then became a teacher in Unguran in Jawa Tengah in 1944 and subsequently took part in the Indonesian War of Independence as a liaison officer in Salatiga . After independence from the Netherlands on December 27, 1949, he joined the diplomatic service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in 1950 became an employee of the Arabia, Middle East and Middle East department. After completing a degree in international politics at the University of Exeter , he was attaché and third secretary at the embassy in the USA between 1956 and 1959 . He then completed a postgraduate degree in political philosophy at Georgetown University , which he completed with a Master of Arts (MA) with the thesis Indonesia’s Muslim Parties and Their Political Concepts .

After his return Sjadzali served from 1959 to 1963 as head of the North America Department of the Foreign Ministry and from 1963 to 1965, first as First Secretary and then from 1965 to 1968 as chargé d'affaires at the embassy in Ceylon . After a brief period from 1969 to 1970 as Head of the Administrative Office of the Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, he worked at the Embassy in the United Kingdom from 1971 to 1974, and then from 1975 to 1976 as Head of the Department of Press and Public Relations at the Department of State. In 1976 he became Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kuwait , the United Arab Emirates , Bahrain and Qatar and remained in this post until his replacement by R. Sajogo in 1983, after which he himself was Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1980 to 1983.

On March 19, 1983 he succeeded Alamsjah Ratoe Perwiranegara as minister of religion (Menteri Agama) in the fourth government (Kebinet Pembangunan IV) of President Suharto and held this office from March 23, 1988 to March 19, 1993 also in the fifth government (Kebinet Pembangunan V) from President Suharto, whereupon Tarmizi Taher became his successor.

Most recently, between 1993 and 1998, Sjadzali was both a member of the Supreme Advisory Council (Dewan Pertimbangan Agung) , a constitutional advisory body to the President, and chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia) .
