Mundwerk is Thomas Godoj's sixth studio album. On the one hand, mouth means its instrument, its powerful voice, but also the gears that are necessary in today's music business, which must interlock in order to assert itself. It was released on September 23, 2016 by his own music label Tomzilla Musik in cooperation with FAME Recordings. Like the previous album, Mundwerk was alsofinancedby crowdfunding .
Emergence
As in 2014, funding for this album was secured via the crowdfunding platform Startnext. The campaign started on January 22nd, 2016 and the funding target was again at € 55,000. This goal also had to be achieved within the framework of this campaign within a certain self-selected period so that the money could be paid out and it must be used for a specific purpose. At the end of the financing phase, on March 26, 2016, more than € 186,000 had been raised. On September 17, 2016, the album was presented in a release concert in Haltern am See before the release date.

Accordingly, he made the album name for the cover of the body painting -Künstlerin Gesine Marwedel his "mouth" paint on the body. The painted gear train symbolically stands for his craft, complemented by a heart and blood vessels. These stand for the innermost that an artist reveals through his songs. On the front of the album, from the mouth to the elbow, the left side of the painted upper body of Thomas Godoj can be seen, the right painted shoulder area is on the back, on which all the song titles are listed. In terms of color, the cover is designed in red and beige tones. The lower third is held in red, which contains MUNDWERK in white capital letters and with a white border. At the top right are the words Thomas Godoj, also in capital letters, with Godoj in larger and bold print. Nils Eichmann is responsible for the artwork for the entire booklet. The booklet contains all the lyrics and additions to the background of the respective song.

The exclusively German texts deal with interpersonal issues, but are also socially critical or convey the hope that everything will turn out for the better.
In Hallo Zeit, “he has a dialogue with time and realizes that he has neglected to consciously experience it more often.” In these fast-moving times, a question that, in his opinion, should be asked more often. However, the song is also a look back at the years he has worked in the music business.
A song is alive that recapitulates whether the path taken and the decisions made are correct and that comes to the conclusion that “everything is right”.
Adults sometimes slow themselves down by repeatedly questioning decisions, instead of like children who “always run wild, no matter how far”. He believes that we adults should follow this infantile instinct more often.
In his opinion, simply being human should be our goal in today's world, in which every individual is faced with challenges every day. A passage in the socially critical song: "And in all faces, all colors of the world, I can see what holds us together." The refugee issue had moved him very much, as he had come from Poland with his parents as a child.
After losing a loved one, he realized, as he says, after the first grief that you have not lost this person because you always carry him with you in your memory. This is thematized in You are there : "When I close my eyes, my world is filled with your light."
One of the services that could be acquired as part of the 2016 crowdfunding campaign was singing a song together with Thomas Godoj in a backing choir. On July 9, 2016, the song Frequencies was sung together. In terms of content, the song deals with the fact that things often happen between two people that cannot be explained rationally - that the people concerned may not understand themselves.
Musically he experiments more with electronic elements on this album. For the title song Mundwerk he gets support from Said (rapper) , who says in a distinctive chant : “You should do what is important to you as long as blood is flowing through your veins. Search for paradise, hold on to what makes you dream ”. In terms of content, it's about his capital, as he himself says, his singing. But also about the machinery that turns his thoughts into words and keeps his dream of asserting himself in the music business going.
Music video
The single Mensch sein was released as a download on July 1, 2016 before the album . The song can be found both on the album and in the download portals under the name #MNSHSN .
A casting for the video for the single was started on April 25, 2016 by the Göttingen-based company DLuxe Media on Facebook . The search was for: "For an artful and emotional clip on the subject of humanity [...] personalities with different ethnic roots who have no problem showing themselves in front of the camera in their natural form." Tobias Langer and Daniel Barbosa, the managing directors from DLuxe Media, who are also musicians themselves, also composed and texted the song together with Heike Kospach. Heike Kospach wrote, among other things, Stadt von Adel Tawil . The film was shot on May 3, 2016 in Bielefeld in a completely white studio with a fillet that gives the impression of an endless space. You can see twelve naked people with the word “human” painted in different languages on their chests. Tobias Langer was the director and Lars Zacharias was the cameraman.
trip
The tour of the same name for the album started on November 18, 2016 in Frankfurt am Main and ended on December 11, 2016 in Leipzig . On this tour through 13 cities he was accompanied by Sebastian Netz , Thomas Spindeldreher (both guitar ), Sebastian Heuckmann ( electric bass ) and Olli OZ Schmitz ( drums ). On the last two dates, René Lipps , who also composed and wrote three of the songs on the current album, played the guitar instead of Sebastian Netz. Torsten Meyer from deutsche-mugge.de singled out this band in his concert review this time: “As much as Godoj shines with his pleasantly deep voice, wins over people with his naturalness, sweats on the stage, so much you have to call his band in the same breath, without which none of this would work. As always, Sebastian Netz dominates the sound with his guitar. Drummer Olli Schmitz beats his heads brutally, then again pleasantly and economically, and Thomas Spindeldreher on the second guitar and bass player Sebastian Heuckmann are completely convincing. That can also be mentioned. "
