The Museo d'Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina , also called MADRE for short , is a museum of contemporary art in Naples . It opened on June 11, 2005 in Palazzo Donnaregina , which had been redesigned by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira . The museum operator is the Donnaregina Foundation, established in 2004 by the government of the Campania Region. The focus of the exhibited collection is on the art movements Transavantgarde , Arte Povera and conceptual art as well as art since the 1950s.

architecture

The museum is located right in the center of Naples, about a hundred meters from the Archaeological Museum . The baroque Palazzo Donnaregina was renovated from 2004 to 2005 under the direction of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira . The rooms were freed of ballast and painted white, creating a free and light room concept. The Campania region had not considered a contemporary solution for a museum building in which contemporary art is presented . The contrast between the old and the new was also intended to symbolize the departure of the district that had previously been affected by floods.

The museum building covers 7200 square meters. There are two inner courtyards, one of which is 500 square meters and offers space for large installations , while the other is around 400 square meters and is used by the museum café. The exhibition space extends over four floors and is 2662 square meters. In addition, there are the rooms of the restaurant and café, as well as the ticket sales, the museum bookshop and the offices.

collection

The first part of the museum's collection includes works by the twelve artists Domenico Bianchi , Francesco Clemente , Luciano Fabro , Rebecca Horn , Anish Kapoor , Jeff Koons , Jannis Kounellis , Mimmo Paladino , Giulio Paolini , Richard Serra , Sol LeWitt and Richard Long , respectively be presented in a separate room. These artists were already active in Naples and created new works of art for the museum. For example Rebecca Horn, who exhibited cast iron skulls with neon halos in the Piazza Plebiscito as early as 2002 and thus reminded of the custom in Naples of asking the skulls of anonymous dead for help. She took up this work by allowing such skulls to look directly into a mirror. In another room, Francesco Clemente made a fresco that takes up motifs from his hometown Naples.

The second part shows works of art that have been created since the 1950s. These include works by artists such as Joseph Beuys , Damien Hirst , Roy Lichtenstein , Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol .
