Music for Montserrat

As Music for Montserrat , the concert taking place on September 15, 1997 in the Royal Albert Hall in London was named for the benefit of the Caribbean island of Montserrat , which was badly affected by the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano , with the southern half of the island, including numerous settlements, the capital Plymouth and the island's airport , almost completely destroyed, is known. Artists such as Phil Collins , Ray Cooper , Carl Perkins , Jimmy Buffett , Mark Knopfler , Sting , Elton John , Eric Clapton , Paul McCartney , Midge Ure , the Montserratian calypso star Arrow and numerous others appeared at the concert, each of them at one time Artist in the AIR Studios on Montserrat, which were also partially destroyed in the 1997 eruptions, recorded songs or records. The concert was arranged and produced by the fifth Beatle George Martin . The money raised from this concert was to be used entirely for the reconstruction of the British overseas territory. The proceeds were used to build, among other things, The Montserrat Cultural Center , which George Martin officially handed over to the islanders after its completion in 2006. The concert itself was broadcast on US television around two months later, directed by Julia Knowles . A VHS and various DVDs with the most famous songs from the concert, such as Your Song , Layla , Brothers in Arms , Blue Suede Shoes , Money for Nothing , Yesterday , Hey Jude and Message in a Bottle , were later released. On January 9, 1998, the live album was released by the US independent label Image Entertainment under the title Music for Montserrat . Ten days later, Carl Perkins died at the age of 65 in his home in Tennessee as a result of several strokes; for him the concert at the Royal Albert Hall was the last major live performance.
