Mutassim Gaddafi (also al-Mutasim-Billah Muammar al-Ghaddafi , Mutassim-Billah Muamar al-Qaddafi or al-Mu'tasim-Billah Muammar al-Gaddafi ; Arabic المعتصم بالله معمر القذافي, DMG Muʿtaṣim bi-llāh al-Qaḏḏāfī ; * December 18, 1974 in Tripoli ; †  October 20, 2011 in Sirte ) was a Libyan army officer, from 2007 to 2011 head of the National Security Council and the commander of his father's life guard. He was the fourth son of Muammar al-Gaddafi and his second wife Safaja Farkash .

Life

Mutassim Gaddafi was a doctor. He received his doctorate in 1997 from Al-Fatih University in Tripoli. He completed his military training in Libya and at a military academy for tanks in Egypt . In 1998 he was promoted to first lieutenant, in 2005 he held the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 2006 he studied for a few weeks at the London School of Oriental and African Studies . In the late 1990s he fell out with his father and was accused of attempting a coup . He fled to Egypt, but was able to return to his home country in 2006 and from then on was entrusted with political and diplomatic tasks by his father. On the question of the successor to Muammar Gaddafi, Mutassim was seen as the strongest competitor of his older brother Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi .

In April 2009, he met with the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Washington , which was seen as the most important diplomatic exchange since the resumption of relations between the two countries. In August of the same year he received Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman in Tripoli . At the meeting he expressed a desire for military cooperation and the purchase of military material in the United States.

According to reports from the National Transitional Council , he and his father were arrested and killed in Sirte on October 20, 2011 during the Libyan civil war . He had previously commanded the defense of the city of Brega . Both bodies were displayed in a cold store and buried in a secret location.

Private

Mutassim Gaddafi was known for a lavish lifestyle and invited celebrities like Beyoncé , Mariah Carey , Jon Bon Jovi , Lindsay Lohan and Jay-Z to his parties. He was in a relationship with the Italian model Vanessa Hessler for four years .
