Mykola Pawlowytsch Barabaschow (English transcription Nikolay Pavlovich Barabashov , * July 18 jul. / 30th July  1894 greg. In Kharkov , Kharkov Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 29. April 1971 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian - Soviet astronomer , Astrophysicist and University Rector of Kharkiv University .

Life

Barabaschow studied at Kharkov University until 1919 and then prepared for a professorship at the Institute for Astronomy. From 1930 he headed the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Kharkov, from 1933 he was a professor at the university and its rector between 1943 and 1945. On June 30, 1948 he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR .

Barabashov dealt with the study of planetary surfaces and the physics of the moon . He was one of the authors and co-editors of the first atlases of the back of the moon based on the photos from Lunik 3 and the designer of a spectrohelioscope to study the sun. He wrote a total of more than 150 articles, mainly on astrophysics. He died in Kharkiv at the age of 76 and was buried there in cemetery No. 2.

Honors

In 1941 he was honored with the title of Honored Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR and in 1969 with the title of Hero of Socialist Labor . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor four times .

In 1973, the Barabashov crater on Mars, and in 1978, the asteroid (2883) Barabashov, discovered by the Soviet astronomer Nikolai S. Chernych , was named after him.
