Occurrence
Myristic acid methyl ester occurs naturally in violet roots . The compound was also detected in bark beetles ( Xyloterus domesticus L.).
Extraction and presentation
Myristate can be prepared by esterification of methanol with myristic acid in the presence of hydrogen chloride are recovered.

Myristic acid methyl ester is a flammable, hardly inflammable, colorless liquid with a characteristic odor, which is practically insoluble in water. The compound has a faint onion, honey, and ore-like odor and aroma when it is present in traces.

Myristic acid methyl ester is used as a flavor and fragrance. It is also used as a solvent for pesticides .
