Myths, Wagner and Tomatoes from Thessaly (original title: Όταν ο Βάγκνερ συνάντησε τις ντομάτες) is a documentary film by the Greek director Marianna Economou from 2019. It had its world premiere in February 2019 at the 69th Berlinale in the international cinema section Title When Tomatoes Met Wagner . In February 2020 it was first broadcast by Arte on German television. The TV version is 22 minutes shorter than the festival version.

In Iliás, a village in Thessaly where only 33 people live, the cousins ​​Christos Takas and Alexandros Gousiaris start growing tomatoes organically. Some elderly women from the village help them pasteurize the tomatoes, turn them into tomato paste and sauces, and fill them into jars. Her goal is to sell her tomato dishes in organic supermarkets around the world. The success of the small company opens up new perspectives for the dwindling village population in times of economic crisis. The film follows the team on a trip to Belgium , which is their first trip abroad for the women from Iliás. For the first time, international tour groups are visiting the village, which is largely overlooked by tourism.

The title of the film comes from Alexandros' belief that tomatoes ripen better when he plays music in the fields. He has great hopes for Richard Wagner's music .

Awards and nominations

Myths, Wagner and Tomatoes from Thessaly was selected as the Greek entry for best international film for the 2020 Academy Awards , but was not nominated.

On the Sarajevo Film Festival was myths, Wagner and tomatoes from Thessaly Best Documentary, the Palm Springs International Film Festival nominated for best foreign language film. He won the audience award at the Heartland Film Festival .
