Close to the Beloved is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , which was written in 1795 and published a year later in Friedrich Schiller's Musen-Almanach .

The work is assigned to the Weimar Classical era and is a counterfacture to the poem I think yours by Friederike Brun , which was printed in 1795 by Johann Heinrich Voss and set to music by Carl Friedrich Zelter .

content

The four stanzas are:

I think yours, when the sun shines
from the sea;
I think yours, when the moon's flicker
paints itself in springs.

I see you when the
dust rises on the distant road ;
In the dead of night, when the
wanderer trembles on the narrow footbridge .

I hear you when the
wave rises there with a dull rustle .
In the quiet grove I often go to listen,
When everything is silent.

I'm with you; you are still so far away,
you are close to me!
The sun is sinking, soon the stars will shine for me.
Would you be there!

Form and origin

The four-stanza poem is role poetry in which the lyrical ego puts itself in the situation of a woman who longs for her lover . In the four-line stanza form , the pairs are connected to one another by cross rhymes . The lines of verse of very different lengths, in which iambic five- and two-lifter ends with a female and male cadenza , are in a tradition that Ewald Christian von Kleist founded with his song from a Laplander .

When Goethe heard Gottlieb Hufeland 's setting to music in April 1795 , the music appealed to him immediately, motivated him to write his own poetry and led to a long and influential friendship with the composer. While in the love lament of the popular Danish writer Friederike Brun emotional pathos combined with sensitive, sometimes sentimental thought poetry, Goethe softened the solemn tone and the passion , shortened the 11 stanzas of the model to four and shaped the structure more concisely.
