The Triumph of Sensitivity is a dramatic cricket in six acts by Johann Wolfgang Goethe . The first version was written in December 1777. The play was premiered on January 30, 1778 in the Weimar court theater with music by Carl Friedrich Siegmund von Seckendorff . Goethe himself played the Andrason. content

Andrason asks the oracle . The answer is prompt:

When a palpable ghost is stunned by beautiful hands,
And the linen sack lends its threads
If the mended bride is united with the lover:
Then peace and happiness will come over your house, questioner .

The solution to the riddle: the prince carries a traveling nature with him everywhere on his trains . In boxes it contains u. a. the bubbling spring , the loveliest song of the birds and the moonlight . Only the cool breezes are still missing. The luggage also includes the mysterious arbor . Inside sits a life-size doll, the mended bride , with whom the prince is in love. The stuffed doll contains three sensibilities in addition to Häckerling . These are magic books: Siegwart, a monastery story in three volumes , Julie or The New Heloise and The Sorrows of Young Werther .

Mandandane is astonished to discover - that doll is a true copy of the royal person. The queen knows that the prince loves her. Her husband, King Andrason, doesn't find the whole story with the absurd, stuffed doll amusing at all. So he - a little angry - puts the test to the test. Andrason persuades his wife to take the place of the doll in the arbor behind the prince's back. Said and done.

The result is amazing. The prince opens the arbor and doesn't like the living mandandane because he is in love with his doll. Andrason fulfills the rest of the oracle. He returns the doll to the prince and receives his queen in return. Thus peace and happiness come to everyone involved.

shape

The monodrama Mandandane as Proserpina , a long lament, is inserted into the fourth act . The gods and their mouths, the oracles, play minor roles, but are present. The young playwright Goethe rhymes:

Mandandane to Andrason:

Let us renew the covenant
Give your hand again!
Forgive me for the faithful
So foolishly misunderstood you.

Prince to the doll:

What to please people
The gods ever sent
To renew life
I feel your hand

Self-testimony

“The triumph of sensibility is finished at first sight. The piece has a shape, and I hope it should have a special effect. "

- Goethe's letter of June 16, 1786 from Ilmenau to Charlotte von Stein

reception

  • According to Wilpert , the game is a high-spirited satire on the Werther disease that Goethe himself caused. Lenz is said to have been a model for the prince . In the play, Goethe turns away from the emotional cult of Sturm und Drang and turns to the classical epoch .
  • Conrady emphasizes Goethe's self-irony and his mockery of excessive enthusiasm for nature.
