The Northern Prachtkotinga ( Cotinga nattererii ), sometimes also called black-bellied kotinga, is a species of bird from the family of ornamental birds (Cotingidae). The species has a large distribution area that includes the South American countries Ecuador , Columbia , Venezuela and the Central American country Panama . The IUCN assesses the population as Least Concern . The species is considered to be monotypical .

features

The Northern Prachtkotinga reaches a body length of about 18 to 18.5 centimeters and has a short black beak. Its shape is very similar to a dove. The male is mostly bright blue. There is a black ring around the eyes. The majority of the wings, with the exception of the small arm covers, and the tail are black. There are blue edges on the feathers of the hand and arm wings. There is a contrasting purple-black spot on the throat and upper part of the chest. The back of the underside is decorated with a dark purple stripe. The sexual dimorphism of this species is extremely pronounced. The female is dark brown on top. The plumage looks white scaly. It has a barely visible ashen ring around the eye. The underside is dull sand-colored and turns cinnamon yellow on the belly. Especially on the chest, but also on the belly, the feathers become darker towards the middle, so that they look like lively scales. The tail is black-brown.

distribution and habitat

The species is usually found in tropical zones at altitudes between 300 and 900 meters. In Venezuela they can be found in the clearings of the rainforests near Lake Maracaibo . Observers also reported occurrences in the states of Mérida and Táchira . In Colombia it is common on the Pacific coast and the valley of the Río Magdalena . The bird is rarely seen in the Ecuadorian province of Esmeraldas . In Panama it is present in the east of the Colón Province and west of the Panamá Province near the city of La Chorrera . He was also often seen in the clearings of Barro Colorado Island .

behavior

The Northern Prachtkotinga mostly travels alone, but it happens that several specimens are looking for food on the same fruit tree. As a loner, she prefers to sit in the branches of the upper stratification layer, especially in the sunny afternoons . Your flight is quick and straightforward. Usually you don't hear a twittering from her, so the powerful flapping of her wings is the only acoustic indication of her presence.

Naming

Boissonneau used the scientific taxon Ampelis Nattererii in the first description of the bird . When giving the name, Boissonneau followed Coenraad Jacob Temminck's suggestion to dedicate the bird to the Austrian Johann Natterer . The common name Natterer’s Cotinga can still be found in English today .
