As number 41 120 km / h diesel multiple units of the NMBS / SNCB referred to as the 1999 to 2004 Alstom were produced.
history
After the Second World War , various series of diesel railcars entered service in Belgium and were to be replaced in the late 1970s. But since the Belgian railways placed their priority on electrifying their routes instead of buying new diesel vehicles, it took until the beginning of the 1990s for the plans to become concrete. In 1994 it was decided to procure new vehicles and in 1997 an order was placed with Alstom in Barcelona for 80 vehicles. The first multiple unit was delivered in April 2000, 10 months after the originally scheduled delivery date due to technical problems. In addition to the railcars from the post-war period, the Class 41 trains also replaced locomotive-hauled trains with M2 cars .
Since the capacity of the two-part multiple units on some routes, especially between Antwerp and Neerpelt , was insufficient, the Belgian railways ordered 16 more units from Alstom in spring 2002.
The trains of the series 41 are mainly used in the inner-Belgian express train service (IC and IR), but also in local traffic in the Ardennes and around Ghent. Since the diesel multiple units were retired from the post-war period, the class 41 multiple units have been the only diesel-powered vehicles in passenger transport of the NMBS / SNCB.
The vehicles are in depots in Hasselt , Charleroi , Merelbeke and were also based in Stockem until the beginning of 2013.
technology
The engines used are two six-cylinder in- line engines from the US manufacturer Cummins Engine , which drive the two middle bogies. The nominal speed of the motors is 2,100 / min; an engine weighs 18.9 t, so the engines account for more than a third of the vehicle's mass. The power is transmitted diesel-hydraulically via Voith gearboxes. With a tank capacity of 1000 liters, 1000 kilometers can be covered. The built-in generator has a nominal speed of 800 rpm; the three-phase current it generates is converted into direct current with a voltage of 110 V by a converter. The electrical energy is stored in a lead-acid battery with a capacity of 220 Ah and is used, among other things, for air conditioning the passenger compartment.
Accidents
So far, six series 41 vehicles have been damaged or destroyed in accidents, five of them in fires. Due to the accumulation of these incidents, a design fault in the engine is suspected.
- On March 9, 2002, multiple unit 4117 caught fire when it was driven to the Hasselt depot for storage .
- Multiple unit 4193 was badly damaged on July 10, 2003 in an accident at a level crossing in Lovendegem between Gent and Eeklo . The driver of a truck disregarded the safety systems of the level crossing, so that his truck collided with the train. As a result of the impact, the multiple unit derailed and came to a stop after 200 meters next to the track. Both the train driver and the truck driver were injured in the accident.
- On September 3, 2003, multiple unit 4163 caught fire while traveling near Beringen between Hasselt and Mol .
- The third fire on a class 41 multiple unit occurred on April 7, 2005 in Erquelinnes . A diesel engine of vehicle 4109, which was on its way to Charleroi , ignited. A blocked exhaust pipe was suspected to be the cause of the fire.
- On May 18, 2007, multiple unit 4137 burned out in the Antwerp-Berchem station . There was considerable property damage.
- Just one day later, on May 19, 2007, a diesel engine from multiple unit 4313 caught fire in Geel . The vehicle was in a triple unit on an InterRegio connection with the destination Antwerp . Nobody got hurt; a part of the car burned out completely.
